Anatomage transforms medical education with tablet-based virtual cadaver solution

Dissection of a cadaver is not the most glamorous part of medical training, but hands-on learning provides real-world experience that anatomy textbooks cannot replicate. However, not every future doctor or nurse has access to a cadaveric laboratory, and few anatomy students have this valuable opportunity to closely examine the inside of the human body.
This is where Anatomage comes to the rescue. Anatomage software uses the latest Samsung devices to create 3D deconstructed images of realistic, well-preserved human cadavers.
“The Anatomage Table is the world’s first life-size virtual dissection table,” explains Chris Thomson, Director of Applications at Anatomage. “New tablet-based solutions complement larger format solutions. Both the dissecting table and tablet versions of Anatomage provide medical, nursing, and undergraduate science students with quick access to 3D anatomy. Unlike real corpses, they can also click “Undo” to replace structures.
Thomson said that while some schools rely solely on Anatomage’s solution, most use it as a complement to a larger platform. “The idea is that the whole class can gather around a dissection table and interact with life-size cadavers. They can then use the Anatomage tablet to access similar dissection visuals for independent discussion at their desk or in study groups in addition to collaborating. In classes taught on a seven-foot-long Anatomage Table display, students can use Anatomage tablets for lively group discussions, which is important since team-based learning is how much of medical education is taught today.”
Anatomage Tablet provides portable access to Anatomage Table materials, including visual guides and other educational materials. Teachers can create templates and worksheets for students to complete, and students can use tablets to color-code and name structures, and create their own learning materials.
Most medical schools have cadaver labs, but many nursing schools do not. Undergraduate programs are even less likely to have this resource. While 450,000 undergraduate students take anatomy and physiology courses each year (in the US and Canada alone), access to cadaveric laboratories is limited to those attending major universities with associated medical schools.
Even when a cadaver lab is available, access is limited, according to Jason Malley, Anatomage’s senior manager of strategic partnerships. “The cadaver lab is only open at certain times, and even in medical school there are usually five or six people assigned to each cadaver. By this fall, we will have five cadavers displayed on the tablet for users to compare and contrast.”
Students with access to a cadaveric laboratory still find Anatomage a valuable resource because the images more closely resemble living people, Thomson said.

For example, nursing students who used the solution had significantly higher midterm and final exam scores and a higher GPA than students who did not use Anatomage. Another study found that students taking a radiologic anatomy course improved their grades by 27% after using Anatomage. Among students taking a general musculoskeletal anatomy course for doctors of chiropractic, those who used Anatomage performed better on laboratory exams than those who used 2D images and dealt with real cadavers.
Software providers that include hardware in their solutions often configure and lock devices for a single purpose. Anatomy takes a different approach. They install Anatomage software on Samsung tablets and digital monitors, but leave the devices unlocked so teachers can install other useful apps for students. With Anatomage’s real anatomy content on the Samsung Tab S9 Ultra, students can enhance the display quality and resolution to clearly see what they’re learning. It features a state-of-the-art processor to control complex 3D renderings, and students can use the S Pen to navigate and take notes.
Students can also use the screenshot feature on Samsung tablets to share their screen via the digital whiteboard or classroom TV. This allows them to “flip the classroom.” As Marley explains, “Students can then show others what they are doing by naming a structure or removing a structure, or they can highlight the organ they want to talk about in the demonstration.”
